Aiming off

From Orienteering Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

This is a compass technique used to err to one side on a bearing. This is often used when hitting a perpendicular line feature so the orienteers knows what way to go to a control on this line feature when they hit it.

example: From 500m away you want to go to a small gate in a wall. If you take a bearing straight to the gate but don't hit it spot on then you will not know which way to follow the wall to find the gate. By aiming off to the left slightly you know that when you hit the wall you must turn right to find the gate.
