noun. BOF runs an achievement scheme based on Regional events in the UK. The average time of the first three runners is calculated giving a 'Base Time'.

There are three standards derived from this time, Gold being base+25%, Silver base+50%, and Bronze base+100%. To qualify for the award, the orienteer must achieve the standard in three events within a two year period in the same class. There is also an Iron award for those completing three events without retiring or being disqualified.

[Adjustments are made to the times when there are few runners on a course, and at the controller's discretion. Short and B course times are calculated by ratio from the equivalent Long or A course, except that no Gold time is awarded for B courses.]

Championship time is winner+25%, but only awarded at National Events and the JK and the British Champs, at least one of the times being achieved at the JK or BOC, and all three times within one calendar year.

The Badge Times will be published in the results booklet, sometimes as a separate table, which means flicking back and forth, and sometimes neatly interlaced with the competitors' times, a much more satisfactory method.

To apply for the award of a Badge, you write to the scheme's secretary mailto:badges@britishorienteering.org.uk.
