Bonking

"bonking" is a term commonly used by orienteers to describe the onset of physical exhaustion while still involved in an orienteering race. Most common in the classic race discipline, the symptoms of 'bonking' include dizziness, loss of concentration, dehydration/hunger, poor balance and muscle cramps. To prevent 'bonking', athletes can take on board appropriate food and fluids pre-race and during the race. These can include isotonic / carbohydrate drinks carried in a hydration pack, bananas, glucose gels and jelly babies. However it is widely recognised that the most effective strategy for preventing the dreaded 'bonk' is to train sensibly and effectively in the the weeks and months leading up to the big race...
