Cartography is the final part of map making. Its name originates from the process of map making - which required drawing lines by hand and cutting hatches and sticking them onto a number of sheets of tracing paper. This was a time consuming process requiring a very steady hand.

Today computers are used to speed up and make the process more accurate. Survey notes are drawn up on computer usually with either OCADĀ® or AdobeĀ® IllustratorĀ® using a set of symbols as defined by ISOM (International Specification of Orienteering Maps).
